Once you complete your PPL you can fly any non-complex single engined aircraft in reasonable to good weather conditions. However you may (and should) consider upgrading your licence to include additional ratings which would, for example allow you to fly in less favourable weather conditions, at night or in a complex or multi-engined aircraft, thus allowing you more flexibility, a greater degree of safety and ultimately giving you more value from your investment in a PPL.
The IMC rating allows holders to fly in Instrument Meteorological Conditions within the boundaries of UK airspace. It permits the holder to be far more flexible in the type of weather he or she wishes to fly in and, given the somewhat fickle conditions common in the UK, it may well allow you to go flying one afternoon when you may well have been disappointed had you not added the rating. However, it should be noted you cannot exercise its privileges whilst flying in, for example, France. If you can see yourself flying in Europe frequently it might be wise to consider a full Instrument Rating course instead. Not withstanding this, the IMC course is priced at £2195 and includes fifteen hours in a PA 28 and includes the flight test and written test costs and landings. As with the PPL it can be undertaken at either of our Gloucestershire or Bristol Filton bases.
The Night rating does exactly what it says on the tin allowing you to fly after sunset. It is priced at £795 and includes five hours in a PA 28 and landings.
